In a recent interview, Klopp explained that he was put off by the United officials' attitude, which focused on signing high-profile players rather than building a team around a clear football project.
Klopp recalled, "It was not my project, it didn't feel like my project, it was the wrong time, and on top of that, it was not my project."
He also mentioned that he had concerns about the team's approach to player recruitment, saying, "The idea was, 'we bring the best players together, then let's go.' Not at all about the football."
Klopp's meeting with United's officials ultimately led him to pursue other opportunities, including a role as global football chief for Red Bull.
However, it was a conversation with Mike Gordon, the president of Fenway Sports Group, that ultimately led to Klopp becoming the manager of Liverpool in 2015.
Klopp has spoken highly of Gordon, saying, "He's the owner, but John and Tom, after the talk, I wanted to be Mike's friend, he was such a nice guy."
The rest, as they say, is history, with Klopp leading Liverpool to numerous successes, including a Champions League title in 2019.
